“I heard a great one the other day!” Those would often be the first words I’d hear when I climbed into the pick-up truck, before I even got to say “Good morning,” to my old friend Tony Clark. I loved those words! They would begin a story.
Willimantic, Now and Then is a collection of my stories. I have always enjoyed a good story. In fact, I think a good story is the central text of my religion. Our stories tell us who we are, where we’ve been and, often, where we might be going. If you have ever sat down with me for a cup of coffee, you probably have heard some of my stories. I often write stories about people. As Maude said to Harold in that great film: “They’re my species.” I like to write about the people I know, because I think they are an essential part of the community I love. And, I guess the point of my stories is to show off my community.
So, join me, if you will, as I share some of my stories this year. They will appear here every six weeks or so, depending, among other things, on how busy Sarah is! If you want to browse through some of the stories from earlier years, you can check out the Archives.
I hope you have as much fun reading them as I have had telling them!
